What is Ya Hey about really?

By Leah Shifrel

"Ya Hey," by the band Vampire Weekend is about more than one thing. It could be about trust or God or love. It is definitely about power. It may be about God and why people lose faith. Faith is one of those things in life where you as a soul can choose. It says the words "flame" and "glow" which may mean destruction and hope. I am an atheist. I don't believe that there is a higher power up there. There is a very powerful line in the song that makes you really think "how could you watch such terrible things like us?" which may mean that something is up there watching us. I think it should say how could someone watch such sad things happen. Ezra Kinog, the writer, says in the first line "sweet thing," which shows that there is still hope in Ezra's mind and maybe even for me. Another line that stuck out to me was "Only 'I am that I am' / But who could ever live this way?" I think Ezra means without a figure to view, God is almost invisible to a lot of people. We only use what we know. What I am really trying to say is Ezra is feeling sorry for God because he is not there supporting us as we go through life unless we believe in God, which is well -- hard!
